ELA: Guided Reading Using The Reading Strategies Book

Updated: Nov 29, 2019

I've been on a Guided Reading kick lately. I'm a math specialist, but as an elementary school teacher, you really have to become an expert in all areas. I'm currently teaching Kindergarten and First Grade guided reading lessons this summer. It's given me a lot of time to refresh my practice and think about how to help different readers.

While sharing with some teachers in a Facebook group, I saw a lot of people have questions. My goal as an educator is to help as many people as I can and reach as many students as I can. I hope this blog helps you!

I've already spoken about using Jan Richardson's book, The Next Step Forward in Guided Reading. Another great resource for planning Guided Reading lessons is using The Reading Strategies Book by Jennifer Serravallo. If you haven't used this book before, it has a ton of great resources.

This book is extremely teacher friendly. It is broken into 13 goals with about 20 mini lessons in each with photos of anchor charts! They are one-pagers, which mean they are extremely easy to read. I went ahead and tabbed each section of my book, but was trying to decide how I would choose which strategy to use for each reading group. She has a list before the section, but I wanted to look at it as a whole.

So I have created a 9-page document that outlines each strategy and shades it by its level. You can access it by subscribing to my blog and logging into the Member's Only section. I hope you find it helpful!
