I was so surprised today to find out how many people are learning about Jan Richardson's Guided Reading and have questions. I consider myself blessed that I was trained by Jan using her "binder version" of her textbook back in 2008. I continued to be trained by Jan in the classroom through her next 2 editions and in her intervention program. I have used it as a classroom teacher and helped train teachers as an academic coach. I am SO excited that others are implementing this amazing program in their classrooms!
Once you get her book, it's pretty intimidating. It is full of great information and truly requires a concentrated reading. One of the first things I do with teachers is to sit down and look over the high points of the book. We grab tabs and sticky notes and tab all the pages we will go to again and again during our teaching.
I wanted to do the same for you. Click here for a Jan Richardson Cheat Sheet. This document contains bullet points of each section of her text. Use it to know where to look. I would also suggest printing it out and keeping it in the book.
I also created a quick video that explain some of what you see on the cheat sheet. It's about 10 minutes long and walks you through the basics.
Don't forget to also check out the videos included in Jan's book. She has notes of them in each section and you can access using a word from the text.
In the presentation, I refer to several other items. Check out this post for the letter formation cards.
Check out the video on teaching sight words here.
The best way to learn how to do Guided Reading is to get in there and practice. If I can help in any way, please let me know. I have seen results with this program and continue to use it. I just used it today while tutoring a struggling reader. With the right practice, I believe we can have some awesome readers!
I am currently setting up some online PD. If you would like to join, please let me know by commenting or emailing me! Don't forget to join my Facebook Group: Creating Innovative Learners with Jessica Kaminski for more details include a Facebook Live question and answer session! Happy reading!
